Death of Shirley Burton, retired GC communication director

Shirley Burton, retired General Conference communication director, fell asleep in Jesus Monday evening, August 16 at 10:05 p.m.  Hear death is a great loss to the Seventh-day Adventist family in Mid-America and around the world.

Burton had suffered a massive stroke the previous Friday at 4:45 p.m.
John Treolo, Kansas-Nebraska Conference communication director, had just visited earlier that afternoon, finding her in good spirits. They had prayer together, neither of them realizing that this would be their last time they would see each other until Jesus comes.

"Shirley's example of selfless service for the Savior and faithful communication to the saints will always be treasured in our memory," says Roscoe J. Howard III, president of the Mid-America Union.

The funeral of Shirley Burton will be Sunday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Piedmont Park Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.

  • Nuts for the Road at Sturgis

Announced by Jacquie Biloff on Jul 21, 2010

NUTS FOR THE ROAD AT STURGIS

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally of Sturgis, South Dakota, will sport a new banner this year, Nuts for the Road.  A variety of dried fruits, dried vegetables and nuts will be offered with proceeds going to the Rapid City Adventist Elementary School. A committee of four, Phyllis Alexander, Brent Tungesvik, Charlean Swanson, and Debbie Darnell are working together to facilitate this project.

Tungesvik has arranged for a prominent location on Junction Avenue next to Kincaid Funeral Home. Because it is the 70th annual rally, 600,000 bikers are expected to attend the weeklong celebration.

Alexander explains that the rally is becoming more family oriented each year. The mornings and early afternoons at the rally are considered family time with the afternoon and evenings catering to the party crowd, with concerts each evening. “There are many Seventh-day Adventists that come to the rally,” says Alexander. “I see them every year and they have their own Motorcycle Group. I think it was last year they held morning devotions every day.”

Alexander says all attendees are children of God and she plans to have the booth manned from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM from August 8 – 13, 2010. Alexander’s plan is to have four people doing six-hour shifts, some doing two to three hour shifts with six manning the booth at all times. Many will be wearing their bright yellow ACS shirts. Alexander is looking for volunteers who can stand on their feet for two to three hours and would be willing to give of their time at the booth. Youth Director of the Mid-America Union, Hubert Ciscernos, is planning to help August 12 or 13.

Under the banner NUTS FOR THE ROAD will be offered honey roasted almonds, fruit chips, vegetable chips, sunflower seeds, corn nuts, a Cajun trail mix and a milder trail mix, sesame sticks, cashews and dried cherries. Alexander says they will sell nothing that melts. She also exclaims, “I love the rally. I love the noise. If people don’t, they should bring ear plugs.”

  • Disaster Response Leaders Win National Recognition

Announced by Jacquie Biloff on May 25, 2010

Mid-America Adventist Disaster Response Leaders Win National Recognition

Gaylord and Derri Hanson, leaders of Adventist Community Services Disaster Response in the Mid-America Union, are among a coalition of faith-based leaders who received the 2010 national award from Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD). The Hansons belong to the Iowa Disaster Human Resource Council, which was selected from among 55 state and territory regions to win VOAD's 2010 award for excellence in disaster response following the tornadoes and floods of 2008.

The full statement is below, with the Hansons' names bolded:

    IDHRC Wins National Award

The Iowa Disaster Human Resource Council (IDHRC) has received national recognition for its work following the tornadoes and floods of 2008.

The IDHRC received the 2010 State/Territory VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) of the Year award on May 11. Among its many accomplishments, the IDHRC was recognized for the work it has done to strengthen the ability of local communities and the VOAD to respond to disaster events of any size and for developing a collaborative network of organizations to respond to the needs of Iowans affected by large scale disasters.

“Being honored by peers is one of the highest forms of recognition,” said IDHRC Co-Chair Gayle Strickler. “I was grateful there were others from Iowa who joined me on the podium when the award was presented.  It was the work of individuals and groups in all the affected areas that made the IDHRC eligible for consideration.  But no one had any idea that what was done in 2008 would ever lead to such a prestigious award.  I only wish it would have been possible for all the Iowans who contributed to the effort that led to the award to have shared in the experience.”

Strickler was joined in accepting the award by other IDHRC members: Long Term Recovery Chair Don Hampton (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance), Secretary Blake DeRouchey (HSEMD), and members Leslie Wright (United Way, Linn Area Long Term Recovery Coalition), Becky Wood (Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church), Gaylord and Derri Hanson (Adventist Community Service Disaster Response), Seth Gardner (NECHAMA) and Gene Borochoff (NECHAMA).

“The Iowa Disaster Human Resource Council is an important partner during disasters and throughout the recovery,” said Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Administrator David L. Miller. “The work they do to help meet the needs of Iowans impacted by disasters makes them more than deserving of this recognition.”

The National VOAD Board of Directors selected the IDHRC for the award from 55 state and territory organizations. The award was presented to IDHRC members at the 18th National VOAD conference. The conference brings together the organization’s national members, the state and territory VOADs, regional and local VOADs, emergency management, and partners from the private sector.

The Iowa Disaster Human Resource Council is comprised of faith-based and voluntary agency representatives from throughout the state as well as representatives from key government agencies. HSEMD developed the council at the request of local emergency management coordinators to identify and address the unmet needs of Iowa’s citizens impacted by disaster events. In addition, group members assist with the coordination of volunteers and donations during activation of the State Emergency Operations Center as requested, and continue to promote cooperation among all volunteer and faith-based organizations. The IDHRC is a member organization of the National VOAD and also serves as the state’s Citizen Corps Council.

  • May 21st is an Historic Day for Seventh-day Adventists

Announced by Jacquie Biloff on May 19, 2010

May 21st is an historic day for Seventh-day Adventists. It marks the founding of the General Conference in 1863.

"One of the masterstrokes of Adventist history was the formation of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists on May 21, 1863. That organizational highpoint allowed the denomination to become the most widespread, unified Protestant church in the history of Christianity."  - George Knight, historian

The Adventists is a new and highly acclaimed documentary film for PBS stations that explores the Church’s history and contemporary story through its health message.  “The Adventists film is a great reminder of our heritage. Use it to introduce friends, neighbors and colleagues to the healing ministry of Seventh-day Adventists today."  - Cindy Tutsch, Ellen G. White Estate     (also featured)

Consider purchasing The Adventists on Friday May 21. If the film can become an Amazon best-selling documentary it will bring even wider attention to the importance of the Adventists health message.

Announced by Jacquie Biloff on May 04, 2010

Follow the Adventist Church's World Session through media outlets

Daily news and analysis in print, Web, podcast and television

    By Adventist News Network

Tens of thousands of Seventh-day Adventists are expected to gather in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for the 59th Adventist Church World Session June 23 through July 3. For those wishing to follow news from the Session, the church is offering several media resources for daily coverage of news, features and analysis.

The Adventist News Network (ANN) will regularly publish daily news and features on its website news.adventist.org, as well as a daily podcast, Atlanta 2010 Today. In addition, ANN will also produce a daily television news show, Adventist NewsLine - World Session Edition, broadcast on the Hope Channel at 6:30 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.

Also, the Adventist Review will continue in its historic role of making official record of Session with a daily print edition of the magazine. Regular subscribers to the magazine will receive the daily magazines automatically.

ANN will also tweet Session news updates at twitter.com/adventistnews.

"We want church members to be able to know what their leaders are doing, saying and voting," said Rajmund Dabrowski, the Adventist Church's Communication director. "Our team will provide news stories on policy and financial agenda items, as well as feature stories on Session life, personalities and quirks."

ANN's daily one-hour podcast will be produced by former British Broadcasting Corporation radio producer John Smith. Available at the ANN homepage, Atlanta 2010 Today will offer in-depth features, interviews with new church leaders and commentaries, as well as coverage of worship services, music and the Session's Parade of Nations.

"A world church session is a unique and exciting experience, and the podcast will take you to the heart of the most important event in the church's calendar where listeners can share the experiences of some 70,000 Adventists gathered in Atlanta," Smith said.

Smith will be joined by other broadcasters, including representatives from the U.S.'s National Public Radio and veteran Session reporters.

ANN's 30-minute daily television news show, Adventist NewsLine, will give viewers a glimpse of Session activities and a daily wrap-up of news. The show's producer, Williams Costa Jr., associate Communication director for the world church, said the goal is to inform the world church of developments and changes.

"If we have clear communication, it will help everyone have confidence in the world church," Costa said.

Willa Schornmeyer, a veteran TV reporter for KTLA in Los Angeles, will coordinate news for the television broadcast.

Atlanta 2010 Today and Adventist NewsLine will begin broadcasting on Wednesday, June 23. For other news about Session, visit news.adventist.org or gcsession.org.

  • Elder Don Schneider's Proton Treatments at LLUMC

Announced by Jacquie Biloff on Apr 28, 2010

    Wednesday, April 28, 2010

    Dear family and friends,

How is Don? How are the treatments going? How is he feeling? The questions keep coming. It is time to bring you up to date.

As of today Don has only four proton treatments left to take out of a total of 30 treatments. There is one treatment per day, five days per week-and the weekend is free to give the body time to rejuvenate. The Proton Center offers its patients warmth and caring, support and fellowship, as well as the healing treatments. People come to receive physical healing from various places in the United States and Canada. Here they build relationships with the doctors, staff, and one another. Lynn Martell provides opportunities for emotional and spiritual healing too.

In the waiting room besides the usual seating areas with couches and chairs, there is a table with a puzzle in process (most often someone is putting in pieces) and a couple of computers to communicate with folks back home. Plenty of magazines and a book of Sudoku puzzles are available. But especially there is conversation. Patients and family members chat openly with other patients about their lives, their medical history, and how they are getting along.

The first day I came, I met several patients and spouses that Don already knew. It was a Friday morning and one said to another, Does the Proton Center shut down early on Friday? Everything else around here does. They're getting ready for the Sabbath, you know.

Yesterday Don introduced me to a little fellow, maybe four or five years old, who is getting treatments. He would go running down the hall to his treatments . . . zigzagging to avoid other patients, doctors, and equipment.

There are support groups for patients and for caregivers. There are weekly gatherings with a light meal and a speaker. There is a patient-led potluck meal weekly, and a restaurant outing once a week. Many of the patients treat this time as a vacation and do sightseeing.

Don spoke one Wednesday evening. There must have been 150 or more people in various stages of treatment. Some were alumni of the program, others were in the middle of treatments, and still others were being introduced for the first time. Many spouses were present, too. Don told about his own journey, his appreciation for the medical opportunities, and his own trust in God. We gave the new Really Living book that Ken Wade developed from the Really Living shows. It is a way to share ongoing testimonies.

Yeah, but . . . how is Don? That's what we ask Dr. Lilia Loredo, a wonderful Adventist Christian doctor, who tells us that Don is doing well and that we will see his progress in six months when he gets an MRI and other tests.

Actually, Don is full of energy and maintaining a very active schedule of work, meetings, appointments, and some travel on weekends. A couple of weeks ago he joined the rest of the NAD administrators at the Adventist Media Center in Simi Valley on a Sunday where they filmed the North American Division's report for the General Conference Session. The filming took much of the day. The next day Don chaired the Voice of Prophecy board meeting in the morning, drove back the two hours to Loma Linda for his daily treatment and returned to Simi Valley that night so that he could chair the It Is Written board meeting on Tuesday morning before returning to Loma Linda for Tuesday's treatment. During his few weeks here he returned to Silver Spring to film a Really Living program one weekend. This past weekend he went to Wisconsin Academy, where he spoke on Sabbath and celebrated with forty of his classmates plus spouses and friends their fifty-year reunion. And this coming weekend he will speak at Southern Adventist University's baccalaureate service, then return for his final treatment. This is nothing like having surgery with its recuperation time.

So . . . what is next? Wait and see . . . with emphasis on see. That is our prayer. We prayed for God's protection from these powerful treatments. Protect his optic nerves! Protect his pituitary! And the prayers continue. We feel that God is with him, just as He promised in His Word. And we again want to thank you for your assurances of prayer.

I love Psalm 103 and often go there in my praying. It speaks of a merciful God Who forgives our sins and heals us, Who saves us from destruction and crowns us with loving kindness and tender mercies. He even satisfies us with good things to eat so that our strength is renewed. How can we thank Him enough?

You, too, have need of these gifts . . . they are for all of us. Praise God!

    Our love,

    Marti (and Don)

  • New Studio Expands Hope Channel Programming Capacity

Announced by Jacquie Biloff on Apr 22, 2010

New Studio Expands Hope Channel Programming Capacity

Opening is the next step in the church's digital communication commitment, producers say

6 Apr 2010, Silver Spring, Maryland, United States
    Ansel Oliver/ANN

Production manager Joe Sloan used to get calls from church executives asking if they could book the Hope Channel studio for a taping the following morning. "We were thinking more like August," he would tell them.

Since 2003, Hope Channel producers at the Seventh-day Adventist Church world headquarters have worked out of a cramped, 20 by 20-foot basement studio where production could drag -- production assistants would need up to half a day to change program sets.

Adventist Church officers at the ribbon cutting ceremony outside the Hope Channel's new studio in Silver Spring, Maryland, Monday, April 5. The facility is one of 65 Adventist media centers worldwide and will serve the church's world headquarters. [photo: Megan Brauner]

Now, a new 40 by 70-foot studio will enable producers to have multiple sets and increase production, including more live and high-definition programming. The global network now feeds 24-hour programming to 10 channels, and soon plans to expand to five more.

"This should speed things up dramatically," Sloan said at yesterday's ribbon cutting ceremony of the studio's new opening.

The studio is the centerpiece of a new $5.2 million extension of the world headquarters building in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States.

While network executives said media ministries are produced locally around the world in cultural context, several of Hope Channel's non-English channels use English programming to fill several hours of network time a day. In the United States, the network last year was picked up and is now carried by satellite provider DirecTV.

"This studio enables us here at the [Adventist Church headquarters] to cooperate with our world [regions] in accomplishing the mission of the church," said Mark Finley, Hope Channel board chair and a vice president of the world church.

The facility is one of 65 Adventist media centers worldwide and highlights the church's commitment to investing in current media technology.

"Digital communication is the preferred method of communication for many people of today," said Brad Thorp, Hope Channel president. "We're serious about mission when we invest in digital communication. I'm very grateful to the leadership of our church who have seen the vision."

The network produces programs on family, health, world mission, Bible doctrine, religious liberty, evangelistic events and shows designed for children.

Despite a 2008 virtual hiring freeze due to economic circumstances, church officials at headquarters went ahead with the building because of previously signed construction contracts.

In addition to the Adventist Church world headquarters, the building is also home to other entities, including the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, Adventist Risk Management, the church's North American Division and Griggs University/Griggs International Academy.
